It’s taxonomy time (everybody’s favourite time)!
The NatureCounts taxonomy update has been completed for 2025 to align with eBird/Clements. If you spot any issues, such as species names showing incorrectly (e.g. Northern/Mangrove Yellow Warbler instead of Northern Yellow Warbler), please let us know.
Quick reminder of the main species impacted for us in Canada:
- Warbling Vireo split between Western and Eastern Warbling Vireos (Rockies more or less the delimitation in Canada)
- Yellow Warbler becomes Northern Yellow Warbler (no Mangrove YW in Canada)
- Whimbrel split between Eurasian and Hudsonian Whimbrels (a few Eurasian records in Canada)
- Willow Ptarmigan (split from Red Grouse in the UK)
Note that some State of Canada’s Birds species accounts will still reflect the previous taxonomy until the necessary analysis can be completed to update them properly.
That’s all for now!
